Aftercare

Care and service

Everything we make comes back here for free cleaning and checking, for as long as the piece exists. That is not a marketing line; it is how we find out how our own work wears.

ServiceWhat it involves
Cleaning and check-overFree, unlimited, for anything we made. Twenty minutes while you wait if the atelier is not mid-casting.
Claw inspectionRecommended yearly for a daily-worn ring. Claws wear from the outside and fail without warning.
RefinishingSand and matte finishes are re-applied by hand; polished pieces are re-polished. Included for the first five years.
ResizingUp to two sizes either way on most bands. Full eternity and rivière pieces cannot be resized and we say so before you buy.
Insurance valuationIssued at purchase and re-issued every three years at current replacement cost.

What wears out, and when

Claws wear from the outside in and thin gradually; on a daily-worn solitaire expect to have them re-tipped somewhere between year eight and year fifteen. Pavé loses stones when the beads holding them wear, usually announced by a stone that turns in its seat. A ring that catches on clothing has a claw lifting, and it should come off the hand until it is seen.

What to do at home

  • Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a soft toothbrush. That is the whole method.
  • Take rings off for the gym, for gardening, and for anything involving chlorine.
  • Do not use ultrasonic cleaners on emerald, opal, moonstone or any oiled or fracture-filled stone.
  • Store pieces separately. Diamond scratches everything, including other diamonds.

Pieces made elsewhere

We service them too, at an hourly rate, with one exception: we will not re-tip claws on a piece where the original metal has been thinned past the point of safety. In that case the honest answer is a new setting, and we will quote for it without pressure.

Valuations

Issued at purchase and re-issued every three years at current replacement cost. Insurance valuations are not resale values and we make the difference explicit on the document itself, because that gap is where most disappointment in this trade lives.
